An exhibition of artwork by local students opens at the Bradbury Art Museum on Tuesday, Nov. 29, with a public reception, 5-6:30 p.m.
Featured in two galleries will be paintings, drawings, prints and mixed media objects by Jonesboro High School art students. The exhibition continues through Dec. 7.
In September three JHS classes and BAM began a semester-long project. The students first toured the museum, discussing the portrait-themed exhibitions on display. In response, they then created a portrait of their own, inspired by the work they had seen on their visit.
A writing component was initiated and each artist produced a statement explaining their artwork. Both their art and written pieces were submitted to a competition resulting in the work by 23 students being selected for inclusion in this exhibition.
Sharon Lindquist, a well-respected artist and longtime art instructor served as the juror for the show. In addition to reviewing the entries and choosing the featured artworks she also determined the three top award winners and two honorable mentions, all of which will be announced at the opening reception.
This is the second year for the competition, which will continue again next fall, with the addition of other local high school classes.
Also on view are "Embellish" by Liz Quisgard, a New York fiber artist, painter and sculptor and "Tools for Thought: Jewelry" by Chicagoan, Kiff Slemmons. All three shows are open to the public through Dec. 7.
