Jonesboro City Council to Revisit 2016 Budget

The Jonesboro City Council plans to discuss the 2016 operating budget at their meeting Tuesday.

The Jonesboro Sun reports the council heard its first of three required reading of the proposed budget on December 15. $42.32 million has been set aside for maintenance and operations in 2016--almost $2.5 million less than in 2015.

As the city works towards a new salary plan for addressing police pay, the police department is expected to receive a budget just under $10.4 million.  The city’s E-911 emergency dispatching service is expecting a budget increase of $1.25 million to hire an additional full time call taker.  Also, the Jonesboro Fire department is expecting a budget of $9 million.

Salary increases are not a part of the 2016 budget, but the budget does include converting a part-time City Planning Department employee to full time status.

The final details of a revised budget plan which will also affect non-uniformed employees are being worked on by a consulting firm and a staff committee.

Mayor Harold Perrin plans to ask the council to amend the budget to reflect the change.

Cities are required by state law to adopt an annual budget by February 1st.
