Arkansas prison officials say they're open to the legislature's help following the deaths of five inmates at the Varner Unit last week. 

Officials from the Arkansas Department of Correction and the state Board of Corrections testified at a joint legislative subcommittee hearing Tuesday on efforts to curb deaths due to illegal drug usage in state prisons.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — One of the three drugs Arkansas uses in its death chamber expires Thursday, and unless the state can find a new supply it won't be able to execute three men with 11th-hour appeals pending at the state Supreme Court.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - State correction officials say an inmate was found dead in his cell at an east Arkansas prison over the weekend.

The Department of Correction on Monday said 55-year-old Phillip Hardy was found unconscious on Sunday night in his single-person cell at the East Arkansas Regional Unit in Brickeys. Correctional officers began emergency medical treatment before taking Hardy to the prison's infirmary, where he was later pronounced dead.
