Joint City-County Effort Improves Walnut Ridge Road

Brett Cooper, Williams Baptist University

The main road into the Williams Baptist University campus has new shoulders and a new look, thanks to a cooperative effort by Lawrence County and the City of Walnut Ridge.  The project resulted in gravel shoulders on Fulbright Ave. from Hwy. 67 to the entrance of WBU, a distance of 7/10 of a mile.

The Lawrence County road department did the construction work, with Walnut Ridge supplying materials.

“Through their cooperative efforts, the county and the city have completed a project that was truly needed,” said Dr. Stan Norman, president of Williams.  “The shoulders provide much better drainage and make Fulbright Ave. safer, as well as improving its appearance. We extend our sincere thanks to County Judge John Thomison and Walnut Ridge Mayor Charles Snapp for making this project a reality.”

Fulbright is a historic road, built in 1942, which originally served as the access to the Walnut Ridge Army Flying School in World War II.  It now serves as the main roadway into WBU and other parts of northern Walnut Ridge.

Williams is a Christian, liberal arts university in Walnut Ridge.
