Jonesboro City Council to Hold First Meeting Under COVID-19 Rules

City of Jonesboro

The Jonesboro City Council will hold its first full meeting under state orders regarding the COVID-19 outbreak on Tuesday, April 7.

Because the emergency order issued by Gov. Asa Hutchinson limits gatherings to 10 persons or less, the City will meet via Zoom, a video-conferencing app for computers and smartphones.

The public will be able to watch the Council meeting either by the City’s FacebookLive stream or Suddenlink Ch. 24. Residents of Jonesboro can participate in the meeting in any of several ways:

  • Questions, information or comments can be dropped off by 3 p.m. Tuesday at the east door of the Municipal Center, 300 S. Church St., in an envelope marked “City Council Meeting.”
  • They can be emailed to CouncilComments@jonesboro.org either in advance or in real time during the meeting.
  • Residents can comment via FacebookLive on the City of Jonesboro AR Facebook page.
  • Telephone call to 870-336-7248. (Please other methods if possible.)

Mayor Harold Perrin said the unusual times have called for unusual measures and asked the community to be patient and strong while the City seeks new ways to do business and conform within safety guidelines proscribed by the state and Centers for Disease Control.
“Anytime you have to make a change as drastic as this, you know something might go wrong,” Perrin said. “So we will take it slow, and assure everyone who has something to say gets to say it. Coronavirus presents a challenge we haven’t seen in my lifetime, but we will not compromise the public’s right to participate in a Council meeting.”

A Public Works meeting scheduled for Tuesday was canceled by Chairman John Street, who cited a lack of agenda items.
