ASU Mid-South

In West Memphis, ASU Mid-South, formerly known as Mid-South Community College, has served the community and the region for a quarter of a century.  A 25th anniversary celebration takes place soon.  Chancellor of ASU-Mid South is Dr. Debra West.  She gives more information in this interview I conducted with her for A-State Connections.  

New Series of Exhibitions to Open at Bradbury Art Museum

JONESBORO – "Eclectic" opens Thursday, Oct. 4, at Bradbury Art Museum in Fowler Center on the campus of Arkansas State University.

Included in the exhibition are the works of six artists who work in a variety of materials, styles and approaches. Featured are Teresa Cole, Jed Jackson, Tom Lee, Mario M. Muller, Hans Schmitt-Matzen and David Sullivan. Guests will enjoy the opening reception from 5 until 6:30 p.m.

JONESBORO – Grammy award-winning artists Shawn Camp and Bill Miller will open the entertainment lineup for the Saturday, Oct. 20, field concert during the 2018 Johnny Cash Heritage Festival.  Their performances will be in the field adjacent to Johnny Cash Boyhood Home in Dyess.

Shawn Camp, onstage from noon until 12:45 p.m., is a native of Perryville, Ark., where he began playing guitar at age five. At 20, he moved to Nashville to become a professional musician.

It’s a time-honored tradition—a graduating class of students, grateful for the education and the experience they obtained, give back to their campus community. 

But, as education gets pushed into the 21st century, some of the students that universities get are attending classes online and graduating—even at Arkansas State University.  So, just like physical students, online students obtain an experience and, in the case of the graduating summer class of 2018, want to give back to their alma mater.

But, how?

Volunteers make up the heart of a community, and on the A-State Campus, it is no different.  Student volunteers help with different fundraisers, activities, and projects. Whether they are helping to put together shows and events at the Carl R. This segment features another chancellor from the ASU System.  Dr. Robin Myers joined me for this interview from ASU-Mountain Home.  In this interview, I started by asking him about recent recognitions awarded to the university.  WalletHub named ASU-Mountain Home the number one community college in the nation, as well as winning the 2017 and 2019 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence from the Aspen Institute.  The Chronicle of Higher Education also listed ASU-Mountain Home on the list of two-year colleges with the top graduation rates.  Dr.

The Muses Creative Artistry Project.

The Muses Creative Artistry Project is an Arkansas-based arts ensemble.  This group will present a concert of music from operas and Broadway musicals this Thursday, September 13, at 7:30 in Riceland Hall of the Fowler Center on the A-State campus in Jonesboro.  KASU’s Marty Scarbrough spoke with Deleen Davidson, the president and general director of the Muses, about the upcoming concert and about the group’s mission.   Click on the Listen button for the entire interview.

JONESBORO – Dr. Brittany Hendricks, instructor in the Department of Music at Arkansas State University, will present a faculty recital on Tuesday, Sept. 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center Recital Hall.  Admission is free.

JONESBORO – Significant progress on first-time and transfer students, and improved retention results are the highlights of the Fall 2018 11th-day enrollment at Arkansas State University.

A-State announced an overall enrollment head count of 14,058, which includes all students at the Jonesboro campus as well as the students enrolled at Campus Queretaro, marking the third consecutive year with enrollment over 14,000.

Two professors at Arkansas State University have edited a book on the histories of women from the state.  The book is titled “Arkansas Women: Their Lives and Times”.  The book features 15 biographical essays featuring the prominent Arkansas women, from the state’s earliest frontier years to the late 20th century.  Some of the women featured include Senator Hattie Caraway, Daisy Lee Gatson Bates, and Sue Cowan Morris.  The editors for the book are Dr. Cherisse Jones-Branch and Dr. Gary Edwards.

Saturday's game against Southeast Missouri State is slated to start at six p.m.  With the construction that is taking place on campus near the football stadium, parking for Saturday’s game will be an issue.  Director of the Jonesboro Economical Transit System Michael Black says buses will take people from Downtown Jonesboro to Centennial Bank Stadium and then back to Downtown.  Click on the Listen button to hear the interview with Black.

One of Arkansas State University’s “Heritage Sites”… the Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum and Educational Center in Piggott… will host the World War One Reading Retreat the weekend of September Seventh and Eighth.

The line-up has been announced for the 2018-2019 Riceland Distinguished Performance Series at the Fowler Center on the A-State campus in Jonesboro.

Officials with Arkansas State University and Centennial Bank were on hand for a grand opening of the newest building on campus, the new Welcome Center.  Arkansas State University Chancellor Dr. Kelly Damphousse says this new center will fill two needs at the University.

“We have not had a building on campus that had a bank in it, so this is important for students and those who work here, but also, this will be the starting point for those who want to take tours and visit our campus,” says Damphousse.

WalletHub, a personal finance website, released a study on Monday ranking Arkansas State University-Mountain Home as the best community college in the nation.

This week’s Faculty Conference at A-State featured a keynote speaker who talked about his journey towards a new model for student success.  Ann Kenda with Arkansas Public Media reports.

David Laude is a popular professor of chemistry at the University of Texas at Austin, which has roughly three and a half times as many students as A-State.  He came to A-State this week to talk about student success, even though many years ago he wasn’t a model for that himself.
