A March 21 ruling by Pulaski County Circuit Court Judge Wendell Griffen that essentially halted the implementation of medical marijuana use in Arkansas has been appealed to the Arkansas Supreme Court by Attorney General Leslie Rutledge. It is not certain when the court will take up the case.

Arkansas State University-Newport’s Criminal Justice Department is dedicated to a fallen Newport officer. 

The department has been named after the late Lt. Patrick Weatherford, calling it the "Lt. Patrick Weatherford Criminal Justice Department."  Weatherford was killed in the line of duty in June while assisting another officer during a traffic stop.

NEWPORT, Ark. (AP) — A suspect has been arrested in the killing of a decorated northeast Arkansas police officer who was fatally shot while assisting another officer with a traffic stop, police said.

Federal lawsuits are pending over a project to build a transmission line through Arkansas delivering wind energy from Oklahoma to the Memphis area. In this week’s issue of Arkansas Business there’s a closer look at the arguments involved in the case involving two groups of landowners who would have to sell property.

Poverty in Arkansas is an issue.  According to the TalkPoverty.com website, the state’s poverty rate was around 18% in 2015.  Some counties in the state have it worse than others. 

In Northeast Arkansas, Greene County’s poverty rate was below the state average, while St. Francis County exceeded the average at 27.7%.  With so many people living in poverty, something has to be done to correct it.  That is where the Crowley’s Ridge Development Council comes in.

After a line of weekend storms moving through the area, 3 rivers in the KASU listening area have been placed under a flood warning until Wednesday.

The Associated Press reports forecasters said residents of Independence, Jackson, and Lawrence counties could be affected by the flooding of the Black River at Black Rock.  Sunday morning, the river was reported to be a little over 15 feet at minor flood stage; just about 1 foot above its 14 feet flood stage.

 One local organization is actively looking for volunteers to tackle the overcrowded foster care system in the state.

Member station KUAR reported Thursday Arkansas has a high recidivism rate of 48% and over 1,00 foster care children in need of a home.  Arkansas’ foster care issue is also having a huge effect on a Northeast Arkansas organization who works often with children in the system.
