Special elections were held on Tuesday in Northeast Arkansas which resulted in a millage increase and an extension of a sales tax.
Voters in the Lawrence County School District approved a 2.9-mill increase. School superintendent Terry Belcher said the money will go towards constructing a new gym, a baseball and softball complex, and a safe room. The project is expected to cost around $8.5-million.
The Pocahontas School District in Randolph County also asked voters for a millage increase—and got it. The 3.44-mill increase will go toward constructing a new, spacious elementary school building. That’s expected to cost around $20-million, but the state will contribute around $9-million toward the project.
Harrisburg police and fire departments will now get more funding, thanks to voters passing a measure to extend and reallocate a one-cent sales tax. The sales tax was originally funding upgrades to a wastewater plant and water well. But, the tax was going to sunset on December 31.
