What's the Issue? - An Explanation of the Medical Marijuana Amendment

What do California, Nevada, Arizona, Massachusetts, Maine, Florida, North Dakota, and Montana have in common with Arkansas this election season?  In those states, voters will decide on issues revolving around marijuana.  Voters in Arkansas, Florida, North Dakota, and Montana will specifically decide on the medicinal uses for the cannabis plant.

In 2012, Arkansans rejected a proposal to legalize medical marijuana.  This year 2 measures for medical marijuana were on the ballot, which were issue 6 (“Arkansas Medical Marijuana Amendment”) and issue 7 (“Arkansas Medical Cannabis Act”).  Both measures were challenged in the state Supreme Court and only one was struck down.

Even though both measures are on the ballot, only votes on issue 6 will be counted.  In the final report of “What’s the Issue?” I will be speaking Roby Brock, host of Talk Business and Politics.  We talk about what issue 6 is and what a “for” or “against” vote will do.  We also compare issue 6 with the 2012 amendment and discuss what happened to issue 7.

To see how Arkansans feel about medical marijuana, you can read the Talk Business and Politics-Hendrix College Poll here.

To learn more about issue 6, you can visit the University of Arkansas Extension website here.
