The Arkansas Department of Health will begin accepting applications for medical marijuana patient cards at the end of the month, according to an agency news release. The cards will be distributed to qualifying patients and caregivers in order to allow the purchase of medicine from licensed dispensaries. The Health Department says it will distribute the cards approximately 30 days before medical marijuana is available for sale in the state. That could be next year.
Starting June 30, patient applicants will be able to fill out their information on the Department of Health website or submit paper applications. Applicants will be charged nonrefundable fee of 50 dollars. Cards will have to be renewed annually and will be available only after the drug is available in the state. Applications will require a written certification from a doctor confirming that a patient has a qualifying condition.
Earlier this week, the state began accepting applications dispensaries and cultivation center licenses. In November 2016, voters approved the constitutional amendment legalizing medical marijuana in Arkansas.
