A teacher with the Nettleton School District is in custody after being accused of having "inappropriate relations" with a student.

Jonesboro Police posted on Facebook that Jermaine Thomas was arrested on Tuesday morning for first degree sexual assault and "three other charges".

Police say that on Thursday, April 21 the high school resource officer was notified about an alleged inappropriate relationship between a school employee and a student. Thomas' arrest came after the JPD's Internet Crimes Against Children Division's investigation into case.

The Nettleton School district website shows that Thomas is the head boy's basketball coach for the junior high school.

The school district said in a statement on Facebook that Thomas was placed on administrative leave, saying that "Nettleton remains focused on student well-being and will not tolerate conduct that adversely affects its ability to provide students with a safe and secure learning environment."

School district officials also went on to offer counseling to students who need support.

Meanwhile, JPD said Thomas was being held at the Craighead County Detention Center awaiting a probable cause hearing on Tuesday.
