Craighead County looking to agressively collect owed business taxes

Craighead County Tax Collector Marsha Phillips is under fire from the Quorum Court over a lack of being able to collect over 300-thousand-dollars in delinquent business property taxes.  Several Justices of the Peace questioned what the next step would be in collecting those taxes.

According to the Sun, Phillips told the court that 53 businesses have still not paid taxes, with some of the taxes not being paid for several years.  She says some of the businesses are no longer in operation, or owners have moved out of Jonesboro.  Several Justices say they want the county to retain a lawyer to assist the county in moving forward with the tax collections.

The Justices will review a list of collectible delinquencies during the next meeting on September 12th.   After that review, a decision will be made about what to do next.
