Jonesboro city council to meet tonight, could make city debt free

The City of Jonesboro could be debt free after tonight’s city council meeting.  A proposal to make an early final payment on a 10 and a half million dollar loan is to be considered by alderman.  The Sun newspaper reports Jonesboro took out the loan in 2011 to help pay for construction of a new city hall, a fire station and public works facility.  Instead of building a new facility, city officials decided to renovate an old bank building, which is now the new Municipal Center on Church Street.  Tonight’s proposal would be for the council to take about 2.7 million dollars from the general reserves fund to pay off the debt early, which would reportedly save the city about 49 thousand dollars.  The fund reportedly has over 30 million dollars available.
