Workers laid off from Noranda Aluminum in New Madrid, MO will get support from Governor Jay Nixion.
KFVS-TV reports Governor Nixon announced Tuesday the Missouri Department of Economic Development will allocate $1.7 million in resources to support those affected by the plant’s layoffs.
A portion of the funds will go towards helping workers with costs associated with housing, utilities, transportation, and emergencies for up to 3 months.
The other portion will go towards helping workers find employment through job fairs and tuition for earning a certificate or degree.
Noranda officials announced in February the company filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy. The company has laid off nearly 850 workers after 2 pot lines at the smelter temporarily went idle early January due to an electrical circuit failure.
