Chancellor Search Underway at Arkansas State

ASU System

The ASU System is starting a search process for the next chancellor at Arkansas State University. A-State's current chancellor Dr. Kelly Damphousse announced his resignation effective at the end of June. He is the sole finalist for the position of president at Texas State University.

ASU System President Dr. Chuck Welch says he would like the position of chancellor to be posted next week. He tells about what he foresees are the next steps in the process.

"I would envision about a six-week posting of the job description," says Welch. The position is expected to be posted in about a week.

"We would then have initial committee interviews, whether by Zoom or telephone, or whatever we choose. Ultimately, we would take a long list of candidates and make it a shorter list. The final 3 or 4 could then be brought to campus for on-site interviews."

He says he realizes that the search process and the interview process will likely take place in the summer.

"One of the challenges of starting the process now and stretching it into the summer is that you don't have everyone you want on the committee joining in during the summer," says Welch. "We will make sure there are online and in-person components to make sure everyone can participate in the process".

Welch says once the resignation was made, there was immediate interest in the position.

"I didn't do anything to encourage the interest in the position, but once the news made social media, I was flooded with inquiries about the position."

He says he feels good about the ability to attract a "great" candidate to Arkansas State for the position of chancellor. He hopes that a new chancellor could be announced sometime this summer.

No names were presented for as possible interim chancellor candidates during a special meeting of the ASU Board of Trustees Monday.
