Gov. Asa Hutchinson listens as Stan Jones speaks Tuesday after being named to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.

Following two years of interviews for the job, Governor Asa Hutchinson appointed Stan Jones to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission Tuesday. Jones, a fifth-generation farmer and hunting lodge owner from Walnut Ridge, applauded previous efforts by the commission to promote the outdoors in Arkansas.

“I know we’ve got some difficult situations and issues that we’re going to have to face, but I’ve got a very positive look and attitude on everything, the Game & Fish [Commission] has done a good job, and I’m happy to be a part of it,” Jones said.

Governor Hutchinson expressed his faith in Jones, citing his experience as an avid hunter and outdoorsman.

“I’ve seen how he knows the habitat, he appreciates it, he works to protect it, and to me that is in the essence of a game and fish commissioner,” Hutchinson said.

The governor stressed the importance of outdoor activities in drawing tourism dollars to the state, "and if you look at economic drivers in Arkansas, Game and Fish is such a critical part of our growing economy in this state, but also the quality of life that allows us to attract industry and leaders and visitors here,” Hutchinson said.

Jones, a graduate of Arkansas State University and member of the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame, was adamant in his support for the Natural State’s outdoor offerings.

“Where else would you want to go and fish or hunt? What other state would you go to and have all of this right at your front door?” Jones asked. “We’ve got a lot to be thankful for, and this is pretty awesome.”

Jones replaces outgoing commissioner Fred Brown, and will serve a term of seven years.
